It’s not even an hour later then it should be, so quit complaining. Surprise! iFixIt took apart the latest MacBook. It was a big day for Google. They launched Android 2.2 while making fun of Apple and a web-based iTunes competitor, but it wasn’t all good. Steve isn’t so impressed with Google’s new video format. Apple finally got good news on the lawsuit front, one of the many against them has been dismissed. In other lawsuit news, Apple settled one with one of their former employees. It was another bad day for Apple suppliers, but at least someone is standing up from them.
One analyst believes that Apple is selling more iPads than Macs. And new reports say it’s probably going to continue that way. Following a pretty embarrassing time in the national spotlight, Apple has reversed its policy regarding no cash for iPads. Apple also opened the international iPad App store. A new report pegs it as controlling 16% of the e-reader market. In patent news, Apple is looking into contextual advertisements.
New reports put the next iPhone at around 4 million shipments in Q2 alone. Apple now claims a 26.6% share in music downloads. There is some belief that there might be an Apple TV update. iTunes has integrated Rotten Tomatoes ratings.
Finally, we’d like to take the time to send our condolences to the Sennheiser family, Dr. Fritz Sennheiser passed away today at the age of 98.
I know, we lied. We said: A. the news wouldn’t come at 5:30 on weekdays and B. it would come every day. Quit complaining… Monster news day kicks off today. Yesterday, Apple gave a slight bump to the MacBook. Seems certain MacBook Pros are having issues. For those that need the visual breakdown of Apple’s success, 9to5Mac gives you this chart of Q2 2010. Apple is rumored to be making Final Cut Studio more prosumer-like. Isn’t that why they have Final Cut Express? Apple then clarified the rumor. The Apple-Google fight is still going on, this time over AdMob/iAds. Apple has been sued for selling music over the internet.
In the Mac OS X world. Apple released the latest build of Mac OS X 10.6.4 to developers. Apple then released a Java update for Leopard and Snow Leopard to the public. In today’s version of patents. Apple filed for a trademark of the Remote icon. They also took up trademarking the MobileMe iDisk logo. Cupertino won MacBook & Media Player patents. Apple filed for a trademark of the retail Apple Store.
It was yet another bad week for Apple suppliers. Wintek claims that it gave the workers who were poisoned at its factory proper medical care. Then, a report from one of China’s leading newspaper exposed some incredible stuff regarding what goes on at Foxconn.
The Verizon CEO talked about having an iPad. Then all of those fun rumors regarding the Verizon iPhone started up again. But AT&T’s head isn’t scared. And then some crazy ideas regarding an all white iPhone emerged.
Apple released iPhone OS 4 Beta. A bunch of new features came including… tethering! (AT&T had no comment.) One that isn’t there is “Airplane Mode” prompting. Seems some people have kindly made some cases to protect Gizmodo’s $5000 iPhone. Apple has claimed 72% of the Japanese smartphone market. Steve must really like Vietnam. Now there is a prototype iPod touch with camera floating around.
iPhone mobile payments should be starting soon. Seems as if an iPhone heart rate monitor is going to be launching on June 1st. It was a big 36 hours for the app that was Tweetie and is now Twitter for iPhone. First, it was pulled from the app store. Then it quietly reemerged in the App Store with a very familiar icon. Then it went live.
So there was tons of news. Vietnam is Steve Jobs favorite country given the new leaks regarding the MacBook. AT&T is planning some updates. Finally, Steve and Gawker had an interesting conversation.
Over the years, there have been a lot of applications to help users maintain their Macs. There has also been growing debate over whether or not regular maintenance of a Mac is even necessary. While I will not settle that debate today, I will provide some thoughts directed towards those who do feel that doing maintenance is am important aspect of owning and operating a Macintosh. Recently, I was given the opportunity to review Versatile Studio’s VS190 portable battery. Versatile designed this battery to compliment and work well with the Macbook Pro line of computers. In order to test this unit properly, I hooked it up to one of Apple’s new 15″ i7 Macbook Pros with Anti-Glare. I will discuss this battery on a number of levels, including aesthetics, portability, truth to advertiser’s claims, and usability.
The battery itself is artfully designed. It contrasts well with the Macbook Pro hardware, and can very conveniently be set underneath or beside the Macbook Pro to rest. The size of the battery is also very well-considered. It is small enough to fit in your laptop bag without making it too bulky. How many episodes of LOST are left? Barely 24 hours after hitting stores, seems the 13″ MacBook Pro is already selling out. Steve thinks the next release of Final Cut will be “awesome.” Intel recently clarified that Light Peak might logically succeed USB 3.0. After the announcement that the iPad has been internationally delayed, Rogers and O2 have begun to discuss the carrier rates. The iPad is not welcome… in Israel.
Dates regarding the release of the next iPhone continue to be guessed, seems June 22 is the logical choice. iPhone OS 4.0 seems to point towards some sort of automobile dashboard – we’ll wait and see. Apple has filed for a trademark regarding iAd. Seems Opera Mini was a good idea.
