Daily News Recap (July 29, 2010)

iFixIt got their hands on a Magic Trackpad, and did what we all wanted them to. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is investigating why the iOS 4 doesn’t play so well on the iPhone 3G. A day after a class action suit was filed regarding the iPads, Japan’s industry minister decided to complain about the old iPod nano fire issues. Thinking about adding a second drive to your 27″ iMac like Apple did? It’s not so easy. Apple sold more phones than Motorola, again. A new job listing for Mac OS X 10.7 seems to hint at it being “revolutionary” – hmm… The most interesting news of the day, Apple ditched Google and Skyhook and is now using its own location service.

Steve Ballmer isn’t so happy with the three million iPads Apple has sold. It’s not the first time, but seems AOL screen names aren’t working with iTunes. In patent news… There was a bunch of handheld accelerometer related filings. Then there was patents about 3D portable devices. Also, more info regarding iTravel emerged. Apple also is looking into a fashion app?

Finally, my friends at Texas A&M think Apple is a new religion.

Daily News Recap (July 26, 2010)

Pretty interesting day in news today. Apparently, most iPhone users love AT&T. Oops. AT&T will be fixing iPhone upload speeds in the next couple of weeks. After adding Nokia to the list of companies to point out flaws in… Apple decided to post a video of the Droid X. Apple has begun shipping free Bumper cases to those in the UK. In Jailbreak news, Spirit’s iOS 4.0.1. Jailbreak is delayed because of FaceTime. But that’s really not that important, because the Library of Congress has just made Jailbreaking legal. Not really sure how they have jurisdiction over that… but.

Following reports of low iMacs and Mac Pros, Mr. Gruber seems to think there might be a whole lot of things tomorrow. A couple days after my rant on iLife 10, seems more information about iLife 2011 is emerging. Why do the French know all about this? Apple has begun testing Mac OS X 10.6.5. LG seems to think that Apple may have some delays in trying to get the iPad in other countries. Apple is rumored to be offering free engraving on iPads purchased during the holidays. The news isn’t particularly shocking, but it’s freakin’ July.

Daily News Recap (July 23, 2010)

Apparently the rest of the TMF staff is incapable of posting all but two of the 93 news stories from the past couple days. So… here we go.

A day after Apple announced its Q3 financial results, Microsoft did the same and at least for now, they are Redwood is ahead. Apple has promoted Jeff Williams to Senior Vice President of Operations with a focus on Quality Control. Apple’s huge data center in Charlie’s secondary backyard should be ready by the end of the year. iSuppli believes that by 2011, Apple will be the second largest purchaser of semi-conductors. Apple was announced #2 in something this week: software instability. This might have something to do with the recent Safari Auto-Fill vulnerability. Apple updated Snow Leopard Server. Apple released yet another Xcode 4 preview to developers.

Turns out Steve isn’t done mocking other smartphones, the next victim: Nokia N97 Mini. About a week after Apple’s press conference, Apple launched the iPhone 4 Case Program App. Apple also began refunding purchases for those who have already acquired Bumpers. Shockingly, there were some hiccups.

AT&T’s dropped call rate has dropped from 1.44 per hundred calls to something along the lines of 0.91 (This link will download a .PDF) Other relevant AT&T news? They activated 3.2 million iPhones this last quarter. Apple could help add a couple more pretty soon. In other news, our friends at Verizon said that Apple changed their mind about something, too bad it wasn’t antenna placement. Chitaka Research is reporting that half of iOS devices are running iOS 4.

In patent news, Apple has filed for patents regarding a mono playback option on the iPod. There were also some ramblings on some small products. AppleInsider continued to promote the illogical idea of an ad-based OS.

iMac shortages seem on the brink and that comes in the wake of Mac Pro supply problems. The blogs are caught up in some idea that because someone posted the publish date a French helpbook for iLife 2010 as September 23, 2010. Here’s my take:

  1. If it gets released in September, it will be 2011
  2. There’s no actual evidence from Apple that it will be out then
  3. Anyone could have posted that book
  4. This is a load of crap

My favorite Microsoft blogger bought an Apple product, apparently she likes it.

Daily News Recap (July 1, 2010)

Steve’s had a busy 48 hours:

The lawsuit has been filed regarding iPhone 4 reception issues – over/under on it being settled: five years. In the mean time, don’t expect any free Bumpers. Despite this – AnandTech claims that the latest rendition has the best reception of any iPhone. Apple is looking for some antenna engineers though. In addition to proximity sensors, breaking glass and reception – some iPhone 4s are also showing a yellow camera. Apple did manage to fix the issue regarding iOS 4 and Exchange. iAds was launched today. AdMob is reporting that only 44% of iOS 4 devices are in North America. So those wonderful Verizon iPhone rumors are in full swing, again.

In other news. iTunes U surpassed 250 million downloads. Apple’s Q3 financial call will take place July 20th. In patent news, Apple filed for a trademark of My iPhone icon and patents for GarageBand.

WWDC Predictions/The Weekend Update (June 7, 2010)

Glenn alluded to earlier that there hasn’t been a list of what to happen at WWDC, that’s because he hasn’t read this post. Of the staff, Charlie is the least interested in WWDC 2010 (although he will be buying a new iPhone), so it seemed appropriate that I write this post. (Yes, that was third then first person – get used to it) And since there really wasn’t a whole lot of non-WWDC Apple news (there actually is really little news on most weekends anyways) – it seemed logical to put this in the same post.

Daily News Recap (June 3, 2010)

Finished reading the update from Tuesday yet? Apple seeded the newest release of Mac OS X 10.6.4 with no known issues. After all of the coverage around Foxconn and the suicides occurring at their factory, Foxconn raised salaries 30%, although claiming that it had nothing to do with the suicides. Seems as if the Mac mini is not in high supply and oh yeah, WWDC is in five days. Seems the DOJ is not so happy with Apple. Steve was at this thing called D8. After being attacked by Jobs, Flurry Analytics changed some things.

More photos of a white iPhone have emerged. (If this thing doesn’t come out it will be hilarious) Then the spare parts guide came out. Apple pulled an app, while sort of – Widgets anyone? AT&T has had a busy 48 hours. First, they overhauled the way their data plans for the iPhone and iPad operated. Don’t worry though, if you’re a current iPhone customer you can keep your unlimited data plan. AT&T also topped a new report for the fastest 3G connection. Someone thought that e-mailing AT&T CEO would be a good idea to show their displeasure for the new data plans, turns out that’ll get you a cease and desist letter. AT&T then implemented common sense and apologized. After all that, Verizon claimed they weren’t get the iPhone soon. Although that didn’t stop them from testing the iPad.

Speaking of the iPad, AdMob updated its SDK to support the iPad. S3 Graphics is trying to prevent the iPad and iPhone from staying on the market. Thirteen fifth graders got free iPads because of a picture the were in.

Finally, here’s a video of an awesome felt-tip lego printer.

Daily News Recap (May 26, 2010)

Sorry for the lack of news. Seems Apple isn’t doing a good job staying up to date either, a research says Safari has a two year-old hole. Apple seeded the latest build of Mac OS X 10.6.4 to developers. Office for Mac 2011 got some new icons. In patent news, Apple was awarded patents for Final Cut Pro and the iPod. The bad news continues for Foxconn. Despite claiming that they weren’t a sweatshop, another Foxconn employee (#11 this year) has committed suicide. This comes in the face of three statements following the tenth reported suicide and undercover investigation from three major corporations, including Apple, who said they would independently investigate the situation. Cupertino’s days have been mixed: Genius Bar employees are suing Apple over breaks and the DOJ is investigating iTunes, but hey – they surpassed Microsoft in market cap.

Apple is apparently doubling iPad production for Q3.That may or may not help the people trying to get them overseas. But don’t worry, those of you that are getting them in stores will have a chance to as the Apple Store will open early on Friday.

The iPhone is shockingly getting updated soon. The obvious explanation is that AT&T told their employees. In addition, the iPhone 3G is not available at AT&T stores anymore. (It also got quasi pulled from the Apple Online Store) Digitimes reported that there may be two different models of the next iPhone, although Apple is only going to release one. If the iPhone were released to Verizon, a new report says AT&T could lose 40% of its subscribers. Perhaps putting Wi-Fi in Time Square will help them keep an extra percent. Sam Mendes is shooting a commercial for the new device.
