First Look: WWDC 2010 Keynote

Apple kicked off the 2010 Worldwide Developers Conference with their annual press conference hosted by none other then Steve Jobs. It all started off with a little jazz music and then the things we’ve been waiting for. Since we weren’t in attendance and Gizmodo didn’t have their livefeed – it was a little bit harder this time. Hit the jump for the details.

Daily News Recap (June 1, 2010)

So… let’s try to catch you up on all of the news in the past five days. A couple days ago Steve Ballmer was in the news quite a bit. First, he had to answer questions regarding Apple’s surpassing marketcap. Then there were some thoughts that he was going to go to WWDC and then he squashed those. After all that marketcap shenanigans, a new report put Apple.com as the number two online retailer.

In the storefront world it was also a big weekend with numerous stores celebrating their Grand Openings. Seems Apple stores and Microsoft showrooms(?) are going to be in a lot of the same places, wonder who will sell more? Just to be clear, this is a Trojan horse. Intego also found some spyware in free screensavers. Despite the ongoing Google/Apple war, those using Windows at Google are going to have to find a new OS. Doesn’t Google make an OS?

In WWDC news, Engadget received information regarding what it believes to be the next Apple TV, Google you’re screwed. Boy Genius Reports believes that a new iTunes.com and Macs are coming at WWDC.

Foxconn has not had a whole lot of people defending it, but a new article pointed out that in reality Foxconn’s suicide rate is below average. Steve cited this here. Then there was the theory that the migrant workers were really the ones to blame. In the mean time, Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn’s parent) has raised wages 20%. A new report says that Apple might be giving a share of its profits to the employees at Foxconn. Turns out it will be around .7%.

In patent news, Apple filed for something regarding an iPhone headset. Apple announced a new rendition of QuickTime to the patent office with some fun stuff. There were some pictures thrown around regarding cloud syncing and solar iPhone charging. Two patents for the Magic Mouse made their way around the internets. Cupertino won a whole bunch of Designs: Part 1 & Part 2. In trademark news, Apple is facing a lawsuit regarding iAd.

Then there was all the iPad news. The iPad was launched internationally in nine countries, that shockingly brought down Vodafone’s servers and the device shockingly sold well. The big news was the new sales numbers, 2 million in 58 days. Self-publishing books are allowed in the iBooks Store.

Just in case you were wondering, the iPhone grew more then the Android did in May. AT&T said that four out of ten iPhones sold are to enterprise customers. If anyone is doubting the new iPhone is coming, Telefonica (Spain) removed the iPhone 3G and 3GS. AT&T is going to begin offering insurance for the iPhone, yes it’s a hell of a lot more expensive then Squaretrade. Apple is allegedly looking into Bing implementation in iPhone 4… where have we heard this before? In addition, Apple randomly turned on Places geotagging and perhaps flashlight mode? A Czech iPhone site confirmed the new high-res screen on the iPhone. A Portugese site then got some video of the inside of the next iPhone. There were some random parts floating around China. In addition, Kevin Rose may or may not be rather familiar with the next iPhone. AT&T is apparently installing large displays in its stores for the upcoming iPhone, no reference to high-res or anything. Skype 2.0 was announced brining quite a few key features, for free.

Finally congrats to the popular Mac forum, MacRumors, who reached 10 million forum posts.

Daily News Recap (May 26, 2010)

Sorry for the lack of news. Seems Apple isn’t doing a good job staying up to date either, a research says Safari has a two year-old hole. Apple seeded the latest build of Mac OS X 10.6.4 to developers. Office for Mac 2011 got some new icons. In patent news, Apple was awarded patents for Final Cut Pro and the iPod. The bad news continues for Foxconn. Despite claiming that they weren’t a sweatshop, another Foxconn employee (#11 this year) has committed suicide. This comes in the face of three statements following the tenth reported suicide and undercover investigation from three major corporations, including Apple, who said they would independently investigate the situation. Cupertino’s days have been mixed: Genius Bar employees are suing Apple over breaks and the DOJ is investigating iTunes, but hey – they surpassed Microsoft in market cap.

Apple is apparently doubling iPad production for Q3.That may or may not help the people trying to get them overseas. But don’t worry, those of you that are getting them in stores will have a chance to as the Apple Store will open early on Friday.

The iPhone is shockingly getting updated soon. The obvious explanation is that AT&T told their employees. In addition, the iPhone 3G is not available at AT&T stores anymore. (It also got quasi pulled from the Apple Online Store) Digitimes reported that there may be two different models of the next iPhone, although Apple is only going to release one. If the iPhone were released to Verizon, a new report says AT&T could lose 40% of its subscribers. Perhaps putting Wi-Fi in Time Square will help them keep an extra percent. Sam Mendes is shooting a commercial for the new device.

Daily News Recap (May 17, 2010)

Surprise! U.S. Mac sales are doing really well. Digitimes had some interesting things to say about the next iPhone: 24 million shipped, Foxconn, iBooks, high-res screen, etc. Sir Paul McCartney claimed that EMI (not Apple Inc or Apple Records) is responsible for the lack of Beatles on iTunes. There are two new jobs at the Apple Store. As for the never-ending saga of the next iPhone. Video of the next-gen iPhone has emerged out of Vietnam. Funny though, because the Vietnamese are importing fewer iPhones. Apple clarified the locking (or lack their of) of the Japanese iPad. Speaking of iPad. GQ hasn’t sold a whole lot of iPad editions.

This will be the last time the news comes out at 5:30 EST on a weekday for a while, still the news will be out daily. In the mean time, if you’d like to make your own Apple lawsuit, you can.

The newest rumor for WWDC: cloud-based iTunes. The Apple-Kodak fight is now official compliments of the ITC. The newest build of Mac OS X 10.6.4 came out today. Bad day for Apple suppliers. Wintek is facing a lawsuit from 44 employees. There was yet another suicide at a Foxconn plant. Lawsuit week continues this week. MONKEYmedia sued Apple. But don’t worry, Apple might be the largest company in the U.S. soon.

If you would like to sync your iPhone via Wi-Fi, there’s an app for that, just not in the iTunes store. In case you were having doubts about two cameras on the next iPhone, there is some more interesting data hidden within iPhone OS 4 pointing to multiple cameras. Flash came to the iPhone today… sort of. The search warrant in the Gizmodo iPhone case had been unsealed, yeah – there’s some interesting stuff in there. Apple’s iBooks store may not go over so well in the U.K.

If you would like a $200,000 iPad, here’s your chance.

So large amounts of partying led to no news yesterday. Apple has seeded Mac OS X 10.6.4 build 10F46 to developers. Former Labor Secretary, Robert Reich, had a good idea: the FTC should stop focusing on Apple and focus on the people who are actually hurting the economy. If you would like to buy a prototype Apple interactive TV Box, too bad. Apple ranked No. 4 in the online retail surveys. Despite this, Cupertino is struggling with its “cool” factor? Nokia has sued Apple, again. On top of that, Nintendo isn’t so thrilled with Apple either. WWDC 2010 sold out in 8 days.

So for the utter rumors of the day… MobileMe is going free? A new rumor discusses the possibility of AMD chips in the Apple line-up. The CEO of Warner Music teased the idea of Apple streaming music. And something about contractless paying? Apple has a new 3D Widget thingy. The cooler patent of the day, some biometric heart sensor app.

Turns out the iPad broke a new record, fastest product to a billion dollars. And they are all sold out. Nine more countries will get the iPad on May 28, as well as the international iBooks and iBooks Store. If you’d like a iPad laptop, you are in luck.

Here’s a shocker, Verizon customers want a Verizon iPhone. Too bad they aren’t getting one this year. Shipments of the iPhone are definitely up according to IDC. The next-generation iPhone is definitely getting a HD screen according to an Italian blog.

The iPad numbers just keep getting more and more interesting, here’s the newest from iSuppli. Random House continues to illogically not give the iPad their books. The iPad has been jailbroken. Rumor has it Nokia might have an iPad competitor in the works, that’s not going to fail.
