Daily News Recap (July 26, 2010)

Pretty interesting day in news today. Apparently, most iPhone users love AT&T. Oops. AT&T will be fixing iPhone upload speeds in the next couple of weeks. After adding Nokia to the list of companies to point out flaws in… Apple decided to post a video of the Droid X. Apple has begun shipping free Bumper cases to those in the UK. In Jailbreak news, Spirit’s iOS 4.0.1. Jailbreak is delayed because of FaceTime. But that’s really not that important, because the Library of Congress has just made Jailbreaking legal. Not really sure how they have jurisdiction over that… but.

Following reports of low iMacs and Mac Pros, Mr. Gruber seems to think there might be a whole lot of things tomorrow. A couple days after my rant on iLife 10, seems more information about iLife 2011 is emerging. Why do the French know all about this? Apple has begun testing Mac OS X 10.6.5. LG seems to think that Apple may have some delays in trying to get the iPad in other countries. Apple is rumored to be offering free engraving on iPads purchased during the holidays. The news isn’t particularly shocking, but it’s freakin’ July.

Daily News Recap (July 23, 2010)

Apparently the rest of the TMF staff is incapable of posting all but two of the 93 news stories from the past couple days. So… here we go.

A day after Apple announced its Q3 financial results, Microsoft did the same and at least for now, they are Redwood is ahead. Apple has promoted Jeff Williams to Senior Vice President of Operations with a focus on Quality Control. Apple’s huge data center in Charlie’s secondary backyard should be ready by the end of the year. iSuppli believes that by 2011, Apple will be the second largest purchaser of semi-conductors. Apple was announced #2 in something this week: software instability. This might have something to do with the recent Safari Auto-Fill vulnerability. Apple updated Snow Leopard Server. Apple released yet another Xcode 4 preview to developers.

Turns out Steve isn’t done mocking other smartphones, the next victim: Nokia N97 Mini. About a week after Apple’s press conference, Apple launched the iPhone 4 Case Program App. Apple also began refunding purchases for those who have already acquired Bumpers. Shockingly, there were some hiccups.

AT&T’s dropped call rate has dropped from 1.44 per hundred calls to something along the lines of 0.91 (This link will download a .PDF) Other relevant AT&T news? They activated 3.2 million iPhones this last quarter. Apple could help add a couple more pretty soon. In other news, our friends at Verizon said that Apple changed their mind about something, too bad it wasn’t antenna placement. Chitaka Research is reporting that half of iOS devices are running iOS 4.

In patent news, Apple has filed for patents regarding a mono playback option on the iPod. There were also some ramblings on some small products. AppleInsider continued to promote the illogical idea of an ad-based OS.

iMac shortages seem on the brink and that comes in the wake of Mac Pro supply problems. The blogs are caught up in some idea that because someone posted the publish date a French helpbook for iLife 2010 as September 23, 2010. Here’s my take:

  1. If it gets released in September, it will be 2011
  2. There’s no actual evidence from Apple that it will be out then
  3. Anyone could have posted that book
  4. This is a load of crap

My favorite Microsoft blogger bought an Apple product, apparently she likes it.

Daily News Recap (July 19, 2010)

Seems the iPhone 4 proximity sensors might be getting fixed in the next software update. Seems some tiny Chinese manufacturer is to blame for the lack of the white iPhone 4. Apple has begin pulling Bumpers from its stock. Seems the details of AT&T and Apple’s relationship are emerging. Apple’s bluetooth Magic Pad has gotten FCC approval. Apple responded to Congress over some data questions. Apparently, Apple is working on a new video format. The iPad will be in nine more countries on Friday.

Daily News Recap (July 16, 2010)

Apple held the much anticipated press conference today, essentially: death grip applies to everyone, media blew it out of proportion and free cases for everyone. Apple also announced it had sold three million iPhones in the first three weeks. Starting up the Verizon iPhone rumors, Steve said that there is a Verizon cell site on the Apple campus. We’ll have more on this later.

Jason Chen got his stuff back after the DA dropped charges over the $5000 Gizmodo iPhone. Foxconn denied ripping off its workers. USB 3.0 is said to be part of the newest Macs. Firefox Home is in the App Store.

Daily News Recap (July 12, 2010)

Sort of a light news day. If I were you, I’d check back later – word on the street is that we are supposed to have a major announcement coming later today. Consumer Reports doesn’t recommend the iPhone 4 – although they really haven’t stopped anyone from purchasing them at this point. Secunia is reporting that Apple leads in most bugs found in its own products, yeah… we know: there is nothing wrong with your WinMo phone. Apple released four new ads for FaceTime. Yesterday, I mentioned that Fring had brought Skype to the iPhone – seems I spoke too quick.

Finally, congrats to TweetDeck, happy second birthday.

The Weekend Update (July 11, 2010)

It’s a rare occurrence, the Weekend Update of late. Tired of the World Cup? Anyways, here’s the Apple news for the past couple days. Despite gains from Google, Apple is still number two for smartphones in the U.S. Fring has been approved, meaning 3G Skype calls can be done. . Apple was included in part of a fairly large lawsuit regarding mobile mail patents. Apple is making progress on getting Wi-Fi on the iPhone 4. Remember all of those poor Apple employees who worked the entire day during the iPhone launch, turns out they are getting a decent reward for their services. A lawsuit over AT&T’s exclusivity over the iPhone is oddly moving forward – whatever “forward” might be. The iPhone 4 has been jailbroken, meh.

It’s been a while since Apple sued someone, but they did file lawsuits against resellers who sell fake power adaptors. Despite an earlier report that the iPod touch would be getting a five megapixel camera, MacRumors and iFixIt have determined the iPhone 4’s camera won’t fit in the (current) iPod touch. Rumors are about the next Apple TV continue to emerge, the latest one regarding $.99 streaming movies. New pictures have emerged of what appears to be the next iPod shuffle In closing, Apple has finally decided to start recalling defective Time Capsules.

P.S. Daniel told me I needed to include some hint about TMF’s new theme and that it should be out soon. Here’s the hint: I wouldn’t get your hopes up, I’ve been hearing that for weeks. Did that count?

Daily News Recap (July 8, 2010)

Turns out NetNewsWire decided to work. A UK retailer leaked some details about the next iPod touch. Apparently Steve Jobs is unaware that iOS 4 kills the battery on older iPhones. Seems as if the backorders are starting to ship. Just beware… it may catch fire.
