First Look: WWDC 2010 Keynote

Apple kicked off the 2010 Worldwide Developers Conference with their annual press conference hosted by none other then Steve Jobs. It all started off with a little jazz music and then the things we’ve been waiting for. Since we weren’t in attendance and Gizmodo didn’t have their livefeed – it was a little bit harder this time. Hit the jump for the details.

WWDC Predictions/The Weekend Update (June 7, 2010)

Glenn alluded to earlier that there hasn’t been a list of what to happen at WWDC, that’s because he hasn’t read this post. Of the staff, Charlie is the least interested in WWDC 2010 (although he will be buying a new iPhone), so it seemed appropriate that I write this post. (Yes, that was third then first person – get used to it) And since there really wasn’t a whole lot of non-WWDC Apple news (there actually is really little news on most weekends anyways) – it seemed logical to put this in the same post.

Re: 10 reasons not to buy Apple’s new iPhone 4G

Matt Warman of the Telegraph decided to inform users not to buy the next iPhone. It wasn’t pretty. Charlie’s thoughts after the jump. Here’s what Gruber had to say about this article…

Matt Warman wins the race as the first major technology writer to trash the unreleased next-generation iPhone, sight unseen.

Daily News Recap (June 1, 2010)

So… let’s try to catch you up on all of the news in the past five days. A couple days ago Steve Ballmer was in the news quite a bit. First, he had to answer questions regarding Apple’s surpassing marketcap. Then there were some thoughts that he was going to go to WWDC and then he squashed those. After all that marketcap shenanigans, a new report put Apple.com as the number two online retailer.

In the storefront world it was also a big weekend with numerous stores celebrating their Grand Openings. Seems Apple stores and Microsoft showrooms(?) are going to be in a lot of the same places, wonder who will sell more? Just to be clear, this is a Trojan horse. Intego also found some spyware in free screensavers. Despite the ongoing Google/Apple war, those using Windows at Google are going to have to find a new OS. Doesn’t Google make an OS?

In WWDC news, Engadget received information regarding what it believes to be the next Apple TV, Google you’re screwed. Boy Genius Reports believes that a new iTunes.com and Macs are coming at WWDC.

Foxconn has not had a whole lot of people defending it, but a new article pointed out that in reality Foxconn’s suicide rate is below average. Steve cited this here. Then there was the theory that the migrant workers were really the ones to blame. In the mean time, Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn’s parent) has raised wages 20%. A new report says that Apple might be giving a share of its profits to the employees at Foxconn. Turns out it will be around .7%.

In patent news, Apple filed for something regarding an iPhone headset. Apple announced a new rendition of QuickTime to the patent office with some fun stuff. There were some pictures thrown around regarding cloud syncing and solar iPhone charging. Two patents for the Magic Mouse made their way around the internets. Cupertino won a whole bunch of Designs: Part 1 & Part 2. In trademark news, Apple is facing a lawsuit regarding iAd.

Then there was all the iPad news. The iPad was launched internationally in nine countries, that shockingly brought down Vodafone’s servers and the device shockingly sold well. The big news was the new sales numbers, 2 million in 58 days. Self-publishing books are allowed in the iBooks Store.

Just in case you were wondering, the iPhone grew more then the Android did in May. AT&T said that four out of ten iPhones sold are to enterprise customers. If anyone is doubting the new iPhone is coming, Telefonica (Spain) removed the iPhone 3G and 3GS. AT&T is going to begin offering insurance for the iPhone, yes it’s a hell of a lot more expensive then Squaretrade. Apple is allegedly looking into Bing implementation in iPhone 4… where have we heard this before? In addition, Apple randomly turned on Places geotagging and perhaps flashlight mode? A Czech iPhone site confirmed the new high-res screen on the iPhone. A Portugese site then got some video of the inside of the next iPhone. There were some random parts floating around China. In addition, Kevin Rose may or may not be rather familiar with the next iPhone. AT&T is apparently installing large displays in its stores for the upcoming iPhone, no reference to high-res or anything. Skype 2.0 was announced brining quite a few key features, for free.

Finally congrats to the popular Mac forum, MacRumors, who reached 10 million forum posts.

Re: Google Is Leapfrogging Apple

Last Thursday Josh Herrman at Gizmodo published a piece entitled “Google Is Leapfrogging Apple.” Today, we respectfully disagree.

Daily News Recap (May 24, 2010)

There was actually quite a bit of news this weekend, at least more then normal, but still. It seems like just rolling them into Monday seems like a better idea. AutoCad is coming back to the Mac. While Sydney got a new Apple Store, Chicago is getting one soon. Seems as if the new Yankee Stadium is not so welcoming of iPads. The trademarks of random Apple icons continues, this time iTunes & WebKit.

The iPhone leaks continue. Images emerged of random parts of the next-iPhone, but the real news: iPhone in white. Boy Genius Reports seems to have found some fairly convincing evidence regarding video conferencing. By the way, Steve thinks WWDC 2010 will be a big deal and he will be there. Someone at Best Buy thinks Sprint is getting the next iPhone; funny when we were there this weekend no one mentioned anything. Newest reports point to a $99 iPhone 3GS with the new iPhone. That would make sense given Apple has reportedly stopped shipments of the iPhone 3G. Over 700,000 iPhones have been sold in S. Korea.

Remember that keynote where Google claimed Froyo was really fast, faster then the iPhone? Redmond Pie tested it and well… not so good. Finally a big shout out to the members of the EU Parliament, all of you are getting an iPad.

Daily News Recap (May 20, 2010)

It’s not even an hour later then it should be, so quit complaining. Surprise! iFixIt took apart the latest MacBook. It was a big day for Google. They launched Android 2.2 while making fun of Apple and a web-based iTunes competitor, but it wasn’t all good. Steve isn’t so impressed with Google’s new video format. Apple finally got good news on the lawsuit front, one of the many against them has been dismissed. In other lawsuit news, Apple settled one with one of their former employees. It was another bad day for Apple suppliers, but at least someone is standing up from them.

One analyst believes that Apple is selling more iPads than Macs. And new reports say it’s probably going to continue that way. Following a pretty embarrassing time in the national spotlight, Apple has reversed its policy regarding no cash for iPads. Apple also opened the international iPad App store. A new report pegs it as controlling 16% of the e-reader market. In patent news, Apple is looking into contextual advertisements.

New reports put the next iPhone at around 4 million shipments in Q2 alone. Apple now claims a 26.6% share in music downloads. There is some belief that there might be an Apple TV update. iTunes has integrated Rotten Tomatoes ratings.

Finally, we’d like to take the time to send our condolences to the Sennheiser family, Dr. Fritz Sennheiser passed away today at the age of 98.
