Rate what’s inside with Oink
Some of you might remember Kevin Rose as the young, creative founder of the social news site Digg. After leaving Digg earlier this year, Rose founded Milk, a company consisting of just a handful of people, and in early November they launched their first iPhone app, “Oink”.
The first thing you’ll notice when you launch Oink is that it’s drop-dead gorgeous. There is a use of a very subtle texture that resembles a high-quality paper throughout the app, and the custom font used in the app looks great on the Retina Display.
As for what it does, Oink is an interesting app. Best described as a mashup of Foursquare, Yelp, and Instagram, Oink focuses on users rating things, not just places, along with posting photos and mini-reviews of the things they like.
What does that mean? Well, as an example, one of the dining halls on my college campus, York, has make-your-own stir fry night once a week. I don’t particularly care for York Dining Hall all that much (their hours are awfully inconvenient for a college student), but I adore stir fry night, so inside of Oink I gave Stir Fry Night at York Dining a thumbs up.
Oink integrates with your Facebook, Twitter, and Contacts to allow you to easily find friends that are using the service. Overall, I think Oink is an interesting app that takes the spirit of services such as Foursquare and Yelp and narrows it down to a much more basic scale. For a first effort from Milk, it’s a good one, and I can’t wait to see what Rose’s new company comes up with next. Check out Oink here.

The folks from Taap.it Live Local want to help any Oinkers who want to save their Oinks. Per Tom Nguyen, Community Manager withTaap.it: "With a simple, one step Oink-to-Taap Import Tool located at http://taap.it/import-oink , former Oinkers can convert their painstakingly accrued Oinks into Taaps, and continue rating specific things inside places.
