Many ideas have been suggested for improving the ergonomics of a laptop. Between the various lap desks, desk stands, and other ergonomic products, it can be difficult to know which product will give you the right blend of function, aesthetics, and actual usability. Enter Tucano Ergo Gel.
Ergo Gel is an interesting product – it’s made of a substance called “Technogel,” which is a semi-soft gel that holds it’s shape. It’s smooth on all surfaces except the back, which is adhesive and sticks to your laptop. The adhesive leaves no residue, and is easy to clean. The Ergo Gel works well – and it does what it claims to – it improves the ergonomics of your laptop, while also improving your laptop’s ability to stay cool. Below is a picture of a Macbook Pro with Ergo-Gel applied.
This product does, however, leave me wondering, with my main concern being usability. Who will use this? I’m not sure. In testing the product, I found that my laptop will not fit in most bags with the Ergo Gel attached. Further, it’s kind of a pain to detach/clean/re-attach the ergo gel when you are on the go. Thus, it strikes me that this product probably won’t work well for the mobile user. Further, my laptop doesn’t sit remarkable well on my lap with the ergo gel attached either, which leaves me questioning how much a home user would use this product.
The last category is desk users. I can see this being extremely useful for people who keep their laptop on a desk. However, it is also my belief that such people likely either use an external monitor with their Macbook Pros, which would mean they are either docking their laptop, or using a separate (permanent) elevated stand, or they require a permanent solution (I’m not sure how durable these are over time, but I’m pretty sure most people will choose something that enables them to lift their laptop straight off and into a bag,)
So, we are left with a product that seems like a great idea, and meets all of it’s claims – However, I’m unsure that most users will find this product sufficient for their needs. However, at only $15, it’s certainly one of the least expensive options available. For more information, or to purchase Ergo Gel, visit the product page at www.TucanoUSA.com.
