The Tale Of Two iPhone Ringtone Makers

Tags: , ,

The iPhone is a revolutionary device, so revolutionary not every ringtone will work, nor are you able to choose a song that already exists in iTunes. That is why companies such as iSkySoft and Pixel Research Labs have created applications specifically designed to create iPhone ringtones. In this review we will be looking at the applications Ringer (Pixel Research Labs) and iPhone Ringtone Maker (iSkySoft).Screen shot 2010-02-07 at 10.58.56 AM

First, let’s begin by comparing the user interfaces of these two applications. iPhone Ringtone Maker and Ringer both have the same layout – which is a sidebar to the left and the main media editor on the right. Their arrangement is probably the only thing these two applications have in common. iPhone Ringtone Maker has a theme that is focused upon colored circles. The sidebar is simply made up of circles with text next to them; no icon, no gradients, just a black background with circles and text. In comparison, Ringer has a classy look with floating music notes and a sleek-looking sidebar; which actually has icons.

Usability is the most important feature in most (if not all) applications, and Ringtone Makers are no exception. I want to be able to create a ringtone in minutes, sync my iPhone, and then be on my way. Ringer performs like every application should. It doesn’t stutter when finding music or freeze up when creating ringtones. It easily allows me to create a ringtone in seconds. Having said that, I am not attempting to say that iPhone Ringtone Maker is a horrible application that lags and freezes, but it performs well; not to the level of Ringer, but not tremendously slow. It gets its job done, just with a few additional sighs. Not surprisingly, Ringer takes almost half the memory to run compared to iPhone Ringtone Maker.

These application’s  features are almost identical. Both allow you to see the waveform, edit the volume, fade in and out, and choose any unprotected audio file from your Mac to use for the ringtone. In conclusion, I am going to have to recommend Ringer as it is both more attractive and faster then iPhone Ringtone Maker. In addition, Ringer is cheaper with the price tag of $15 compared to iPhone Ringtone Maker which is $20.
