There are a lot of applications that we use on a daily basis, and quite a few of them are free. We feel that we are only doing a disservice by not telling you about them, so, here’s are first attempt. By no means will these be “full review,” particularly because many of these apps do one or two very specific tasks, but we think we will be able to tell you why we use these apps on a daily basis. First up, MagiCal by Charcoal Design.
MagiCal is a menubar calendar and clock. The reason why we prefer MagiCal over Apple’s default options for what you stick in the menubar simply revolves around the sheer number of options that Charcoal Designs gives us when it comes to how to customize the appearance of what’s in the menubar. We keep just two small icons in the top of the screen: a month and date logo and an analog clock. MagiCal gives you the option to display time, day of week and many other options in whatever font you want.
One of our favorite features is the ability to have a calendar appear at literally the quick of the button. While GeekTool gives you the ability to put a calendar on your desktop, MagiCal gives you the ability to scroll through previous and future months without having to launch iCal. We keep MagiCal up in our menubar because of its sleek looks and simple functionality. You can download MagiCal directly from Charcoal Design for free.
