We don’t normally do posts regarding the announcement of new products. Heck, we tend to miss most of Apple’s events it seems – for some reason this is different. You ask why – well, it’s because it is Twelve South. We hinted that we might see something from them in the near future, and well – this is that post. In case you haven’t figured out, we think that Twelve South might be the Skunk Works of the Apple world. Okay, perhaps that is a stretch – Twelve South is not part of the U.S. government, or is it? What is that picture in left-hand corner, well it’s the BookBook. What’d you think it was, a book from the 18th Century? (We did)
(First off, we don’t know what Charlie was doing in Vegas, perhaps one too many cocktails at lunch – but these pictures aren’t his finest works.) Anyways, during the meeting that Charlie was apparently drunk for, we got a sneak peak at Twelve South’s newest product – the BookBook. What is the BookBook? (Oh, that’s been asked twice now) Well, it’s a book that serves as a case for your MacBook (Pro). That was a tad bit blunt, but that’s sort of what it does. The BookBook is available in black and red and will fit the 13″ and the 15″ MacBook and MacBook Pro models. The inside is soft similar to the inside of that favorite neoprene case, but the outside is hard – not so similar to the neoprene case. Even more outrageous, the Book is wrapped like an actual old book – leather. And perhaps even more outrageous (like Skunk Works outrageous) each one is hand “aged” meaning that everyone is different. While they all generally will look the same, the leather is made imperfect by hand ensuring that yours doesn’t look like the one you see here. A zipper helps to keep your notebook in the case and two straps hold the top case in so that you can use your notebook without taking it out of the BookBook.
Twelve South just announced the BookBook (actually, this post was written a week before – but that’s another story) or at least we think that Twelve South just announced it, so chances are you still have plenty of time to put the thing in your Victorian style dining room without people realizing that it’s a MacBook not something written by Alexander Pope (18th Century Author for those that aren’t familiar with the Englishman’s translation of Homer). Twelve South did a wonderful job shocking us with the BookBook in Las Vegas and we think it looks that good. The BookBook can be purchased directly from TwelveSouth for $79.99.
We have said it before and we are obviously going to repeat it now: the reason why we love Twelve South is they innovate products. If you looked at Twelve South’s lineup before the BookBook you would have thought the next thing coming out of the lab was an aluminum holder for your Cinema Display that fits on the back of your Mac Pro (we haven’t patented that…yet), not some medieval book to house a MacBook. Twelve South thinks of things we can’t think of and for that we are still on the edge of our seats.
Thanks to Andrew and Leigh Ann Green from Twelve South for giving us the first look at the BookBook in Vegas. More specs will be listed as they come and once again, sorry for the bad photos.
