Review: Thinking Home

Having the power to control lights, appliances, and electronics from a single computer is an ingenious idea. Meet Bruce, the brilliant man who created Thinking Home, software that allows you to set schedules for turning on and off different electronics throughout your house, workplace, or yard. With Thinking Home, your house turns into an energy-friendly home, the best way to control your house.

Screen shot 2009-12-23 at 4.05.11 PMThinking Home can be used in many ways. One way to take advantage of Thinking Home is to keep all of your home lights in sync so they turn on when it gets dark outside, and then later, turn off simultaneously so you can go to sleep. Another use of Thinking Home is to turn off appliances when they are not being used, keeping your energy bill down. You could control your children’s lights so that it is “lights out” at 9:00, and then turn on when it’s time to wake up for school. As you can see, the possibilities are endless.

The Application itself is a very easy to use program that is aimed at helping both the beginner and the computer genius. Setup is a breeze as it provides a simple walkthrough on how to get started. When adding a module, you click a single button, scroll through and find what you are trying to add. In addition, there are pictures so you have no chance of getting lost or messing up. As for how the program runs, we feel that it takes a few days to get used to, but most other applications do as well. Thinking Home ran beautifully and we have yet to run into any major issues with this software.

Some of the newer features, as mentioned by AlwaysThinking, are:

  • Schedule Sets  When going away on vacation many people want a different schedule to be used. Instead of turning on the coffee maker, you may want a couple of lights turned on randomly for a more secure, lived-in look. Schedule Sets provide this convenience via a simple popup menu in the Schedules window.
  • 1-Wire Affordable temperature monitoring is just one of the benefits that 1-Wire delivers. It’s easier than ever to check the temperature of the water heater, greenhouse, wine cellar, solar panels or the outdoors.
  • Device Status Now you can keep tabs on the status of each device or sensor and use it in a smarter, more energy-efficient home.
  • Search Fields With more than 130 models of gadgets to choose from, the search field in the Gadget Guide makes it a snap to quickly find what you’re looking for. You’ll be amazed at how well it works — it practically reads your mind. It’s also very handy in the Schedules window, to narrow down your numerous events to just those involving a particular device, time or action.

Thinking Home is the Mac program that can be used with many other modules and devices (the hub of the entire process). Some of the modules that Thinking Home can be used with are as follow: motion sensors, cameras, light modules, appliance modules, wall light switches, outside lighting, entertainment devices, and more. Thinking Home itself is just the software, but the accessories are available from many different websites and stores for almost nothing.
