Today we are going to review Geekbench; a well known benchmarking application for Mac, Windows, Solaris, and Linux which was created by Primate Labs. In short it is an application that allows you to know how your computer stacks up compared to other peoples. Sadly, we cant seem to find a reason for a Mac userĀ to love it, as Macs are not custom built and all have pretty similar specs (minus the Mac Pro since it has a wide array of upgradable parts & the occasional Hackintosh).

We were pleased with The UI since it is a very simple and easy to use application. As for reading the data, it is more than easy. You have two choices for how you want to view your computers read-out. One is the default which has more of a professional look with bars and charts. The other is Plain Text which is (like its name) just a plain text version of the default.

Another cool feature is the ability to submit your score to their website and compare your score with other people around the world. This is where is gets a bit useless for Mac users though. Apple has only a few changeable parts inside their computers, making all Mac scores extremely similar. If you were to use this software on a PC it would be different because they are very customizable.

Having that said, it is time for our conclusion. Geekbench is a very extensive application that gives great results, but we do recommend mac users to just stay with the free version or simply look through the results on their website for the Mac you want to test with the 64bit version, as your results wont be very different. The 64 bit version costs about $20 and we do recommend people on other platforms such as Windows and Linux to use this. We just cant seem to find a reason for a Mac user to spend money to get the same results as other people with that same computer.
Geekbench is available for purchase from Primate Labs website.
