Review: Tritton AX 180
Tritton is a company highly acclaimed for their gaming headsets and video technology. Previously we reviewed the Tritton AX 720 gaming headset and it was one of the best gaming headsets we have used by far, but the AX 180 headset is a stereo headset which doesn’t feature Dolby technology. This headset is in the same league as the well known Turtle Beach X1 gaming headset. The Tritton AX 180 gaming headset is without a doubt the most cost-friendly, reliable headset around, which makes it perfect for cost-conscious holiday shoppers.
Meet the Tritton AX 180
With the release of one of this year’s most popular titles, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2,” most gamers are looking for an edge on other players. That edge can be yours with the Tritton AX 180 gaming headset, which gives you the ability to hear things you never could before, such as enemy footsteps and the direction of fire. With the edge the Tritton AX 180 gives you, the sky is the limit! We are not saying that this headset is among the audio gods, because it is not. The Tritton AX 180 is a stereo headset, and like all stereo headsets they have their downsides.
The downside of sterio
In our review of the Tritton AX 720 Gaming Headset, we mentioned that you can hear everything, both direction and distance, and that is also true with the Dolby technology, which is inside most high-end headsets. But with the AX 180′s money-conscious pricing, that technology is not included in this particular headset (and just about every other headset in the AX 180′s price range). Without this technology, you will not hear as if you were surrounded by speakers, but it will resemble more like the sound of the default Apple speakers.
The comfort factor
As most gaming fanatics know, the comfort factor of a certain headset is key. If you are going to be wearing this for an hour to a few hours each day, you are going to want it to be something that is comfortable and quite frankly not noticeable. Audio is what you strive for, but if it is not comfortable, why bother? Thankfully, the Tritton AX 180 is a comfort genius! The headset is small, lightweight, and designed for comfort. Other gaming headsets should envy the Tritton AX 180′s plush, soft feel as it is one of the most comfortable headsets we have ever used.
The Sound Quality
Sound is the feature all people are looking for, and we will not say that it is even within the same ballpark as the AX 720 headset, but it does however surpass both the Turtle Beach X1 and X3 gaming headphones along with most other stereo gaming headsets. Why you ask? The AX 180 offers tremendous sound quality, enough to still give you that edge over other gamers along with comfort, universal connectivity to all major platforms, and in addition it gives you an outstanding way to control the audio with its controller (part of the wire).
What is it going to cost?
This holiday season most people will be looking for the best deal (like just about every other year). But unlike other low priced headsets, the Tritton AX 180 is made beautifully with the customer in mind. It’s price is $69.99 from most electronic stores such as BestBuy and CircuitCity.
The Final Verdict
We have really fallen head over heals for the Tritton AX 180. It is not Dolby equipped, but this headset is so damn comfortable, it’s almost more fun to wear than to use! The price is something that attracts people of all age groups trying to find the best deal. We have no reason not to recommend this headset to money-conscious buyers. If you are looking for a professional headset with the best sound in the market, look at headsets such as the Tritton AX 720s. Everyone else should look to the AX 180, available for purchase for $69.99 at the stores listed here (Exclusively at BestBuy until early 2010). We award the Tritton AX 180 gaming headset a 4.5/5!
