Review: Tritton Technologies AX 720

Tritton is known for their wide array of high-end multi-media products. Most of all they are known for their Gaming Headphones. When TheMacFeed received a chance to get our hands on the newly released Tritton AX 720 (sold exclusively at BestBuy) we couldn’t say yes faster. Our review of the Tritton AX 720 Gaming Headset is after the break.

The Tritton Ax 720 was created specifically for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 (yes we know we are TheMacFeed) but it also works with Mac and PC via fiber optic port (Dolby Live® recommended)/ USB Port, or sound card with stereo input/output (More information on connectivity located here). For our review we used both an Xbox 360 and a Mac.

The Headset is packed with Dolby Digital, Pro Logic II, and Dolby Headphone technologies which are great for: Gaming, listening to music, and watching movies.

Lets get straight to the point…

The Tritton AX 720 headset is flat out superb. How so you ask? This headset is superb in means of sound quality, superb in looks, superb in price and superb in efficiency. We played games on both Mac and Xbox (Games such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Gears of War 2, and Halo 3). We are astonished by the boost that the AX 720 gives us. Its a whole new game with the AX 720 Headset.

Audio:

When we play with this headset, we hear things we could never hear before. Footsteps in the distance, rain hitting a car windshield, birds chirping, and dogs barking… with this Headset we can hear it all. We also own the Turtle Beach X1 headset and quite frankly, the Tritton AX 720 runs circles around it. Turtle Beach also offers a headset that has the same specs as this headset does, but one issue is that they are frequently out of stock. Along with another issue being that their headset is close to $200 the Tritton AX 720 is only $130.

Sexy Design:

Lets face it this is one of the best looking gaming headsets around. It’s microphone is detachable which is fantastic when you are listening to music, and the ear pieces are actually comfortable! The colors in the design brings forth the sporty look that helps keep the Headset looking modern (compared to other headsets) and the adjustable ear pieces make it a perfect fit no matter how large your head is.  This headset was built to last, and we have not been let down.

Our letdowns:

We do not have many things we could ask for but there are a few. For one, the box that lets us turn the volume up and down along with switching between modes is much too light! Rather then having some friction on the desk, it slides away when it is barely puled (it feels cheap). Also the mic attachment to the Xbox 360 controller is not very nice. It is a single wire connection (Sort of like a headphone plug) making it release static when gently moved leaving your buddies with some back noise. It would help if it has a better adapter such as the kind that the original Xbox Mic has (More support not letting it move).

To buy or not to buy:

Without a doubt, this Headset is a work horse, especially for the price of $130. We do recommend this headset to all gamers, whether pro or someone who just plays on their free time. This headset works, no questions asked. TheMacFeed awards the Tritton AX 720 a 4.5/5!

Please could someone answer my question about the Tritton AX 720 i was wondering if you could turn down the background sound Like the wind and rain, In Games Like call of duty?
    Many thanks.

I bought a pair of these and discovered that I could not get surround sound output from games, including COD4, even though it worked fine for movies. Apparently, imacs (mine is a 27″ quad core), does not support Dolby Digital Live which is required to process a 5.1 signal on the fly (i.e. a gaming environment). I ended up having to return them. *sigh

About the letdown: “single wire connection (Sort of like a headphone plug) making it release static when gently moved leaving your buddies with some back noise.”

Did you find a way to prevent the static? Maybe a macgyver-type-of-solution? I’m willing to try anything.

I have contacted Tritton thru their website, which resulted in them sending a new communication cable. I got fast replies, within one day. Hoping it is not exactly the same cable. Without some additional support to keep it steady, I wouldn’t expect it to prevent the static. We’ll see.
