Review: Mosaica

IMG_0319

Created by Dapper Vision, Mosaica is a program that allows you to create 3D mosaics (which are similar to panoramas) on your iPhone and share them with others via their online service. You can imagine it to be a 3D world of pictures taken by you. We were first contacted regarding our AutoStitch review, it turns out they liked it and were kind enough to let us to do a review on Mosaica.

First Impressions:

Before I got into using Mosaica on our iPhone, I went to their website and looked through all their community mosaics located here. From there I really was impressed by how it looks. Later that night, I downloaded it on my iPhone, I was even more impressed with what I saw then.  It was sort of a little community of people who made mosaics, most of them were tests of people’s desks and back yards. But then I saw the London Bridge Mosaic, that was something that impressed me completely.

Interface:

The main menu of Masaica is very plain and simple, you have these options:

  • My Mosaics
  • Recently Added
  • Most Popular
  • Featured Mosaics
  • User Settings
  • Help

And the theme of the app is sadly, very dull. It is black and white with no color until previewing a mosaic, I guess that is what made them feel most artistic, but I am not a “big fan” of it.

Making Mosaics:

Creating mosaics is super easy, you just take overlapping pictures, and it will put them together. You have got to be sure you have the correct object focused, for example you are taking one of a room. When you take it of a window be sure you focus it on the wall not the window or it will not stitch great nor look great. It will have dark images and light images. Other than getting used to focusing, it is very easy, you can do it of your backyard, your desk, or even WWDC ‘09.

Speed (compared to Autostitch):

Mosaica runs faster than autostitch, though they perform slightly different operations. The main difference in this speed is that you have the option to take photos within Mosaica compared to selecting photos from your camera roll in Autostitch.

Sharing:

Mosaica is built around sharing your creations with our free server hosting.  Tweets made on Twitter using your mosaic’s tiny URL show up as comments on your mosaic page on http://m.osaica.com with a Flash version of your mosaic.  To share with autostitch you have to use another app to upload to Flickr or download it to your computer, there isn’t a centralized location for the panoramas or comments (most users use Flickr tags for this).

Image quality:

Mosaica initially creates a low quality version of the mosaic, and when you upload it to the server a high quality version is made.  This allows you to see your results on the phone as you go while taking the least time processing possible.  Autostitch creates a single image that has fair quality.

Price:

There is a lite version of Mosaica for free, and the full version is $1.00. The server hosting for sharing is free (great feature, having this free is a very nice addition).

Conclusion:

Overall, Mosaica is a very nice app especially for its low price. I still would recommend Autostitch over Mosaica due to the fact that Autostitch is much easier to use, and is able to be printed out. I believe that in the near future with updates, Mosaica will catch up and surpass Autostitch. Mosaica is a great app for sharing a large area in great detail. It is completely up to you, if you want a panorama or a 3D interactive mosaic. I award Mosaica a 3/5.
