If you are looking for a way to geotag the location of your photos then PlaceTagger by return7 is an affordable alternative to adding GPS to your DSLR. Despite having the ability to take fairly decent photos with your iPhone, that will pale in comparison to the quality you will find from even a budget DSLR.
PlaceTagger records your position every minute using the location services already built into your iPhone. According to return7, the application does not require network services, as evidenced in their blog. PlaceTagger will record latitude, longitude, and even altitude with an easy to use 1-touch interface.
Using the free companion software for PlaceTagger; available for Mac OS X (10.5x or newer), Aperture, and Windows using RoboGeo, you can unload your photos from your DSLR and launch the PlaceTagger companion application. While on the same wireless network*, PlaceTagger will find your iPhone and matches the time your photo was taken with the time logged by your iPhone, at that point the application will embed the information into the image metadata.

Unfortunately the app did not run in the background, while running it I received a call and it disturbed the recording. It was only a matter of moments before I was back to recording.
The application is on sale today for $4.99US, that is a fraction of what you would pay to buy an outboard GPS logger for your DSLR. The application works on the 2G and 3G iPhones but it is noted that the accuracy on the 2G iPhone will be hindered due to the lack of built-in GPS.
Features roundup:
- Records your location as long as the app is open
- Choose between better accuracy or better battery life
- Can be used with Aperture via free plugin
- Export in XML (option)
Pros:
- Inexpensive way to geotag your photos
- Simple to use interface
- Runs smooth of iPhone 3G (as tested)
- Choose between better accuracy or better battery life
- Companion software will also show location of photos taken with the iPhone
Cons:
- Appears to be incapable of finding your location when in motion (tested on iPhone 3G only)
- Does not run in the background
*iPhone must be in wifi mode and connected to the same wireless network running the companion software.
